Wikipedia links are cited in the petition against the candidacy of Bongbong Marcos
The petition aiming to cancel the presidential candidacy of former Senator Bongbong Marcos used Wikipedia links as “evidence”.
On November 3, reports surfaced stating that representatives from different party lists urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to nullify the candidacy of the former presidential son.
Marcos was among the presidential aspirants in the 2022 elections. When he was asked about the petition in an interview, the politician said that he is not afraid of it and he will continue his candidacy.
On November 4, social media personality Thinking Pinoy, a known supporter of the current administration, shared a post about the petition filed against Bongbong Marcos. TP said that the petition “offered Wikipedia articles as evidence”.
In his post, the blogger said that Atty. Teddy Te was the one who submitted the petition urging Comelec to deny the presidential candidacy of the son of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
The said lawyer is currently teaching at UP Law and heads the Office of Legal Aid. It is known that the Wikipedia site can be edited practically by anyone. There had been several instances that information written on the site was not factual just like what happened on the page of comedienne-actress Pokwang that stated that she was “crowned Miss Universe 2001”.
Aside from the two Wikipedia articles, Thinking Pinoy also said that petition cited opinion columns, Rappler articles, write-ups written by foreigners, and “some link from a website whose domain name includes “nothinginparticular.”
A netizen who said that he is a college instructor said that he does not allow his students to cite Wikipedia links as “it is not a source”.
