Filipinos Flock to Cemeteries Days Before Scheduled Closure

UNDAS 2021 – The Filipino people have flocked to the cemeteries over the weekend a few days before the scheduled closure.

Previously, the Inter-Agency Task Force approved a resolution announcing the closure of all cemeteries nationwide for the UNDAS season to prevent the possible spread of the coronavirus disease.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año also advised the public to make their visit at cemeteries, memorial parks and columbaria before the temporary closure. Only 10 persons per group or 30% of capacity will be allowed during the scheduled visit.

Last weekend, some Filipinos have trooped to cemeteries nationwide to visit their departed loved ones before its closure from October 29 – November 3, 2021. The cemeteries will be closed to prevent it from becoming a super spreader event.

Some visitors at the Manila North Cemetery visited the loved ones even before sunrise. They have decided to make an early visit in cemeteries before these are temporarily closed for All Saints’ Day (Undas).

On Monday (October 25, 2021), over 403 people have been allowed to enter Manila North Cemetery. Senior citizens and minors are prohibited to enter cemeteries.

League of Provinces of the Philippines president Marinduque Governor Presibitero Velasco Jr. said that several local government units are asking the national government to allow public cemeteries to open on October 30 and 31, 2021.

The police authorities also prohibit visitors to bring pointed sharp objects, flammable items, liquor, sound system for loud music, and gambling items in Manila North Cemetery. Flowers and candles are still sold at their usual prices buy it may increase as Undas approaches.
