Senate, House OK Bills Seeking Extension of Voter Registration Period

Senate, House Approve Bills for Voter Registration Period’s Extension

SENATE – The upper house and the House of Representatives approved the bills seeking the extension of the voter registration period.

Currently, the voter registration period is on its last days as it is about to end this September 30. The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is gearing for both the registration of the voters and the upcoming filing of candidacies. The latter will start this October with the 8th day of the month as the deadline.

However, there are still long queues for the voter registration in designated areas by the COMELEC. Some of which are located in shopping malls and many people have yet to register.

Amid the long queues and the call for the extension of the voter registration period, the Senate and the House of Representatives passed bills seeking for the extension of the period set for voter registration by at least 30 days.

The Senate pushed for the Bill 2408 seeking to extend the deadline of the voter registration period to October 31, 2021. The House of Representatives’ version of the same bill is the House Bill 10261 which orders the extension of the voter registration period by 30 days after the bill is passed into law.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, both bills of the Senate and the House of Representatives were approved on the final reading. If there are no notable differences between the two (2) bills, it may be submitted to the Office of the President for his approval.

Previously, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) told the Congress that it cannot really afford to extend the voter registration period for another month. It guaranteed that it can give a one-week extension but the lawmakers don’t agree with it. The poll body set a meeting to discuss about the possible effects in case the voter registration period would be extended.
