Lea Salonga said this about Regine Velasquez
Tony-winning theater star Lea Salonga mentioned Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez when she was asked about her breakthrough project abroad.
Lea is indeed one of the prides of the Philippines when it comes to music and theater. She has helped the country to be noticed internationally when it comes to this field.
In a recent interview on TV host Bianca Gonalez’s Paano Ba ‘To vlog’s Legend Only series, Lea was asked about her past statement saying that when she did the Miss Saigon that was the time when she felt that her talent was truly appreciated.
The singer-actress explained that although her career in Manila was doing great back then, doing hosting and recording songs, she had a feeling of not really fitting.
“I mean I was not a big belter type vocalist in the way let’s say somebody like Regine Velasquez would be,” Lea Salonga said. She added that what the Songbird was doing can easily be appreciated. “Because she’s just phenomenal and I wasn’t really that,” Lea said about Regine.
At that time, the Broadway star was also focusing on school, and then came Miss Saigon. This opened new doors of opportunity for her abroad. Lea said that it turns about that the kind of voice that she possesses is the one that fits the lead role.
Because of this, she realized that she could fit in somewhere else. When she finally did her international theater stint, she received positive feedback and with that, she said that it was clear that it would be the path where she is leading to.
“This is what I meant to be doing,” Lea Salonga said. Although she has been doing theater plays from when she was young until her teenage years, the award-winning actress said that it was when she started her career abroad that she felt everything was falling into place.
