Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Approves Localized Lockdown

MAYOR ISKO MORENO – The Manila Mayor approved the implementation of the granular lockdown in the capital city amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The threats of the COVID-19 are still present in the Philippines now. Undeniably, the pandemic is even requiring a more intensified fight following the emergence of new variants of the disease. The Delta variant was detected in the country.

First logged in India, the Delta variant is known to have a higher transmissibility rate compared to other variants of COVID-19. It is considered a factor in the spike in the cases in other countries.

In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) recorded local transmissions of the Delta variant. Metro Manila was previously placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) to prevent its spread.

The ECQ in Metro Manila lasted for two (2) weeks before it was downgraded to Modified ECQ, the second strictest quarantine measure. Today, the whole capital region starts to be under localized lockdown.

The Department of Health (DOH) previously stressed that widespread lockdowns may no longer be effective in the current situation as a lot of people have to go out for work. Also, the Health Department cited that cases are usually congested in one area.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno approved the granular lockdown in the capital city through Executive Order No. 28. It contains the implementing guidelines on the localized lockdown. The implementation of the localized lockdown is eye not to fall below 14 days. The LGU can place a certain area under lockdown as per the recommendation of a health official.

The said E.O. echoes the guidelines crafted by the national government in the implementation of the alert level system. Those who will be affected by the granular lockdown will be given assistance by the government or public agencies.
