“SALN Critics Should Be Jailed”, Palace Respects Ombudsman Proposal

Following Pressure From Critics, Ombudsman Proposes SALN Critics Should Be Jailed

SALN CRITICS – Recently, the Ombudsman proposed a new law that would leave SALN critics jailed.

Following pressure from critics and the opposition to show President Rodrigo Duterte’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN), Ombudsman Samuel Marites suggested those commenting on the matter publicly be jailed for 5 years.

"SALN Critics Should Be Jailed", Palace Respects Ombudsman Proposal

Following this, the Malacañang Palace said that it respects the “proposal” of the Ombudsman. According to an article from ABS-CBN, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said:

Nirerespeto namin ang mga opinyon ng Ombudsman dahil siya po ay isang constitutional body. We respect his opinion,

Last year, the Ombudsman issued a memorandum that allowed the SALN to be released only through official probes, court orders, or authority from officials themselves. Meanwhile, last August, Vice President Leni Robredo urged Duteterte to release his SALN to provide more ground for his anti-corruption initiatives.

However, as a response to this, Roque said that the Office of the President’s stance on the issue was clear “We leave it to the Office of the Ombudsman”.

Meanwhile, Rep Arlene Brosas of Gabriela said the Ombudsman’s proposal was ridiculous. Moreover, she emphasized that it left a “chilling” effect for something that should be open to the public.

Bakit gagawing krimen ang pagiging mapagmatyag sa yaman ng mga nakaupong opisyal, pero hindi iniimbestigahan ang mga opisyal na sangkot sa maling paggamit ng pondo ng bayan sa panahon ng pandemya?
