Several variants of COVID-19 were detected in the Philippines. One of them is the Delta variant which is currently a variant of interest for its higher transmissibility rate. It was considered a huge factor in the collapse of the healthcare system of India.

Also, the said variant was tagged as a factor in the spike of the COVID-19 cases in several nations including Thailand and Indonesia. Several countries now are implementing travel restrictions in the pursuit to prevent the spread of the said variant.

In the Philippines, there are already local transmissions of the Delta variant. It prompted the national government to implement stricter community quarantine measures.

Metro Manila was placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) since August 6, 2021 and it is set to expire on August 20, 2021. Amid the two-week ECQ, the vaccination is ongoing in the pursuit of population protection.

The ECQ in Metro Manila is set to expire this Friday. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Metro Manila Mayors are set to make a decision on the next community quarantine measure in the capital region today.

According to the report, San Juan Mayor Francis Zamora said that the Metro Manila Council has met with the Department of Health (DOH) and the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) last Tuesday.

According to Zamora, the Metro Manila Mayors talked with the authorities in the pursuit to find a balance on what to do so the citizens’ struggle would be eased. He stressed that if the ECQ would remain, things would be hard in terms of the business and economy. However, if the restrictions would be eased, there is a possibility that many people will die.

While the Metro Manila Mayors will decided on the fate of the ECQ today, Zamora clarified that whatever they can agree on today, it will still be “recommendatory”. More updates may be posted soon.
