Officials Say LGU Coordination Could’ve Prevented Community Pantry Death
COMMUNITY PANTRY DEATH – Recently, an elderly balut vendor died while waiting in line for Angel Locsin’s community pantry.
Based on estimations from the Quezon City Police Department, around 3,000 people flocked on the site. However, it was revealed that only 300 persons were given food stubs for Locsin’s community pantry.
For her birthday, Locsin wanted to give back to the community through the community pantry. However, a mass of people showed up, overwhelming volunteers. Among those in the crowd was Rolando dela Cruz, a 67-year-old balut Vendor.
Sadly, the man fainted while waiting in line. Afterward, he was rushed to East Avenue Medical Center but was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:00 a.m.
Following the tragedy, Locsin apologized to the family and emphasized that she would do anything to help them get through their loss. Meanwhile, the local government of Quezon City also gave their statements regarding the event.
According to Mayor Joy Belmonte, coordinating with the local officials “would have surely made a difference in the outcome” of the tragedy. As such, she reminded organizers to appeal to her call for coordination with barangays and local governments.
“Advanced coordination will allow all stakeholders to be proactive, rather than reactive. Sadly, in this case, we were not advised regarding any plans, which would have surely made a difference in the outcome of today’s events”
Belmonte stressed that the city government could assist in providing crowd control and enforcement of physical distancing as well as other protocols.
