Former Mayor Antonio Sanchez of Calauan, Laguna Dies
ANTONIO SANCHEZ – The Former Calauan, Laguna Mayor died inside the jail and his cellmates spoke on the happenings before his death.
Among the death cases that hooked national attention were the death of Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez. They were students of the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. Then Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez was accused as the one behind their deaths.
Charges were filed against Sanchez. The politician pleaded not guilty to the accusations against him. In a decision penned by Pasig Judge Harriet Demetriou in 1995, the former Mayor was convicted.
In the said 132-page decision, former Mayor Sanchez was charged to serve seven counts of reclusion perpetua following a guilty verdict on the charges against him. Each count of reclusion perpetua is equivalent to 40 years of imprisonment.
Despite the Court ruling, Sanchez continued to assert he’s not guilty of the accusations against him over the death of Sarmenta and Gomez. Previously, there were reports of his possible early release but it received backlash from the public.

Recently, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) confirmed the death of former Mayor Sanchez of Calauan, Laguna inside the jail. Based on a report on GMA News, he was brought to the National Bilibid Prison Hospital at 8:30 a.m. today but he was declared dead on arrival.
Speaking to Dobol B TV, BuCor spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag expressed that the cellmates of former Mayor Antonio Sanchez expressed that they saw him fine when he went to sleep the night before he was found dead.
“Nakita nila last night ay maayos pa raw natulog. Pero kaninang umaga ay napansin nila na hindi pa gumigising at chineck nga nila,” the BuCor Official said based on the report.
Chaclag added that the former Mayor did not complain of fever or difficulty of breathing. An autopsy will be conducted on his body.
