Filipinos Say Criticizing Gov’t Dangerous, 65% Agree – SWS Survey

CRITICIZING GOV’T IS DANGEROUS – According to Social Weather Station (SWS) survey, 65% of Filipinos say broadcasting critiques of the admin has become more dangerous.

In the current political landscape, more and more people are becoming vocal about their critiques of the government, especially its COVID-19 response. However, the SWS survey revealed that 65% of 1,500 adult respondents agreed that “it is dangerous to print or broadcast anything critical of the administration even if it is the truth”.

Meanwhile, merely 16 percent disagreed with the statement with the remaining 18 left undecided. With this, SWS says the survey provided a score of +49, an increase of 28 points from the +21 score last July.

During the previous survey, 51% agreed that it was dangerous to be critical of the government. Meanwhile, 30% disagreed. As a response to the survey, Presidential Spokesperson and former human rights lawyer, Harry Roque said:

Well, for me, people shouldn’t doubt their right to exercise free speech because that is guaranteed under the Constitution, and the President, as a lawyer, has sworn to uphold the Constitution including the Bill of Rights
