Biography of Jan Catherine Sy – the Granddaughter of Henry Sy Sr.

JAN CATHERINE SY BIOGRAPHY – Here are some details about the granddaughter of the late business giant, Henry Sy Sr., who died at 29 years old.

The Sy family is one of the most popular clans in the Philippines. They are known for being a wealthy family behind many huge and progressive businesses in the country.

The family’s patriarch, the late Henry Sy Sr., was the founder of SM Group – a business conglomerate that owns several huge firms in the country covering mall development, real estate, and banks. He was the richest person in the country for more than a decade.

Last January 2019, Henry Sy Sr., died. He was 94 years old when he passed away leaving the chairmanship to his son, Henry Sy Jr. Now, the family is grieving over the death of Henry Sr.’s granddaughter and Henry Jr.’s daughter, Jan Catherine Sy.

Jan Catherine is the vice-chairperson of SM Development Corporation or more commonly called as SMDC. It is the real estate development arm of SM Prime Holdings. In an Inquirer interview with her, it is stated that she is a graduate of Business and Economics at Westmount College in Santa Barbara, California.

After she graduated Business and Economics in California, she flew to France and focused on the training to become an equestrienne, a female horse rider. She joined international competitions.

Advocacies:

In 2019, Jan Catherine Sy, together with her friends, built The Good Guys for the program Protect Our Community. It aims for community-preparedness from crimes and calamities.

Skills and Talents:

Aside from being an excellent horseback rider, the vice chairperson of SMDC, and an advocate of a calamity-prepared community, Jan Catherine is also a painter and a singer. She is one of the vocalists of the band WeekDaze.

Death:

On March 18, 2021, Jan Catherine died of sepsis, a condition wherein the body’s response to fight an infection affects the tissues. She was confined at St. Luke’s Medical Center after being exposed to a bacteria.
