“Totoo, medyo may pagkamayan talaga kami noon,” the morning talk show host said. She explained that in General Santos, once a family owns a “bangka” that is used for catching tuna, then, they are considered “mayaman”.

Indeed, the family of Melai Cantiveros was well-off during that time. However, something came up unexpectedly that changed that status.

The PBB Big Winner revealed that one time, his father’s fishing vessel reached the boundary of Philippines and Indonesia. Without knowing, the crew of their vessel was already within the boundary of the other country.

Indonesian authorities confiscated and destroyed the fishing vessel and imprisoned the ten crew members for two years. Within that span of time, the mother and father of Melai supported the families of the fishermen who were detained in Indonesia.

Melai Cantiveros said that during that time was their lowest point, especially when it comes to the financial aspect. Her mother had to be the bread winner at that time as her father was losing hope.

Despite their financial status went down, the TV host said that the discipline that her parents taught them made her survive when she entered show business. Melai shared that she still ponders upon all the lessons that her parents taught them.
