He wrote the novel to make Filipinos see the abuse of power the priests show during the Spanish Colonization period.

The novel has 64 chapters. We are going to read the fifth chapter.

Chapter 5 is entitled “Heretic and Filibuster”. Here is the summary of the Chapter:

Ibarra descended from the calesa and headed towards Fonda de Lala, where he stayed until going to Manila. Ibara entered the room with sorrow and thought to his father’s demise.

He looked through the window and saw a bright house across the river. From his place, he heard sounds of silverware and music from the orchestra. He went to the venue and watched the exhibition.

He saw women dressed in expensive clothes with sparkling diamonds and gold. There were angels who offered flowers and pastors who were with the program. The audience seted were Filipinos, Spaniards, Chinese, and friars.

What caught most of his attention, however, was Maria Clara. He was smitten by her ungodly beauty. But when he saw the skinny and pale Franciscan children, he felt pity.

Friar Sibyla was busy talking with women, while Doña Victorina was busy fixing Maria’s hair.

Since he was tired, he easily slept through the night and woke up the next morning. Friar Salvi, on the other hand, can’t take his eyes off Maria.
