UFC Releases Longtime Heavyweights Junior dos Santos, Alistair Overeem
The Ultimate Fighter Championship (UFC) releases heavyweight fighters Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem after longtime service.
Based on the report of Yahoo Sports, the UFC has finally released the two legends, Alistair Overeem and former UFC heavyweight world champion Junior dos Santos after their 12 years fighting inside the octagon ring.
This is after Overeem (47-19), former Strikeforce and Dream heavyweight champion, tasted defeat via second-round technical knockout against Alexander Volkov last month.
The heavyweight fighter first played for the world’s premier mixed martial arts organization in 2011 at UFC 141 against ex-UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar where it won via first-round stoppage.

Meanwhile, Dos Santos was released by the UFC after suffering four consecutive defeats via technical knockout. He last fought against Ciryl Gane at UFC 256 in December where he lost via 2nd round knockout.
“Thanks UFC for a great 12 years! I fought through MMA’s Murderer’s Row to get my shot at the belt. Holding and defending it was one of the great honors of my life,” said Dos Santos (21-9) on Instagram.
“Thanks to every opponent, thanks to every fan and every critic. I’m going to spend some time back at the drawing board, but I’m excited to move on,” he added.
ESPN also reported that dos Santos rejected a brief notice against Marcin Tybura at UFC 260 this month, and that decision led to the promotion release him. The two fighters have yet to say whether they will continue their fighting career after being released by the UFC.
