Surigao del Sur Provincial Government Conducts Preemptive Evacuation Before Tropical Storm Auring’s Expected Landfall

Surigao del Sur provincial government evacuated thousands of residents before Tropical Storm Auring’s expected landfall.

Surigao del Sur Gov. Ayec Pimentel said that the local government unit has conducted preemptive evacuation in 12 municipalities ahead of Auring’s expected landfall on Sunday (February 21, 2021).

The provincial government evacuated over 12,700 residents and the number of evacuees are still expected to increase. The evacuees are currently staying in 30 evacuation centers in 12 local government units.

“Dadami pa ‘yan ngayon kasi ‘di pa nagla-landfall. Pasalamat ako sa mga tao namin, automatic sila, ‘pag sinabing mag-evacuate, nag-evacuate talaga sila walang sapilitan,” Pimentel said.

Pimentel said that the tropical storm is expected to make a landfall over the eastern coast of Caraga Region and several homes in a barangay in Tandag City have been already damaged by the strong winds.

The governor also said that Surigao local government unit has already prepared the necessary equipment, truck, transportation and watercraft in case of flooding. He also revealed that 18 municipalities in the province are coastal towns.
