Tracy Chapman Wins Lawsuit Against Rapper Nicki Minaj

TRACY CHAPMAN VS NICKI MINAJ – One of the most iconic names in the music industry, Tracy Chapman, wins her copyright lawsuit against rapper Nicki Minaj.

Naturally, we can’t deny the fact that Nicki Minaj is an icon in her own right. However, does that give her the right to sample one of Tracy Chapman’s most well-known songs?

Unfortunately, Chapman herself said no. Back in 2018, Chapman filed a case against Nicki Minaj over the use of her song “Baby Can I Hold You” for her song “Sorry”.

According to an article from the Daily Mail, Chapman accused Minaj of giving the song to DJ Flex. However, both Minaj and DJ flex denied these claims.

Minaj asked Chapman for permission to use the song as a sample. But, Chapman repeatedly refused and said she had a policy against such licensing. As such, Chapman has been well-known artist that is on the “do not sample list”.

Sorry was eventually cut from Minaj’s 2018 album, Queen. However, DJ Flex aired an unreleased version of the track on the radio. Later, portions of the song were played on The Breakfast Club. Since then, the song became widely available over the internet.

Afterward, a judge sided with Nicki Minaj and ruled she did not commit copyright infringement. But, the case would still go to trial if Minaj was found guilty of leaking the track.

Luckily, both agreed to a settlement with Tracy Chapman coming out on top. She agreed to a $450,000 settlement along with this, the singer doesn’t have to pay for any costs associated with the lawsuit.
