These are the fun facts about Charlie Dizon who won the MMFF 2020 Best Actress Award for the movie Fan Girl.
Charlie is not really the real name of the rising actress. She was first known as April Matienzo and used this in playing supporting roles in movies and TV shows.
Based on the article from Rappler, it was ABS-CBN executive Charo Santos-Concio who gave the name Charlie Dizon to her because it is more genderless and neutral.
Before formally landing on Philippine entertainment industry, Charlie tried her luck as a K-pop artist. She auditioned for a Korean entertainment agency until she was given a chance to train as a K-Pop star alongside with Nancy McDonie of Momoland, who said that Charlie is her best friend in the Philippines.
However, a problem occurred in her contract, and that K-Pop stint did not push through. Because of that, she went back to college. Charlie first took up Nursing at the University of Sto. Tomas. She stopped for her audition in South Korea and when that did not become a success, she finished her studies and graduated with a degree in Human Resource Management at the College of St. Benilde.
Her showbiz in the Philippines came after that. The 24-year-old actress finally landed on a lead role for the movie Fan Girl with Paulo Avelino. Many people might not know but Charlie was not the first choice for the Antoinette Jadaone’s film.
However, the first actress backed out just before the shooting began. Another audition was held for the role ‘Jane’ and Charlie Dizon stood out from the other auditionees.
Charlie is admittedly a ‘Fan Girl’ also. She has expressed that before the movie, she has been admiring Paulo Avelino already. While doing the movie, however, the actress has a limited encounter with the actor she admires as part of their character internalization.
Charlie Dizon also has a major role in the movie Four Sisters Before The Wedding, the prequel of the much-loved Four Sisters And A Wedding. In real life, the actress also has three sisters.
