Phivolcs Releases Updates on Mayon Volcano for December 26 (Saturday)

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded four earthquakes on Mayon Volcano within 24 hours.

On Saturday (December 26, 2020), the state volcanology agency Phivolcs recorded at least four volcanic earthquakes in the vicinity of Mayon Volcano. The tremors have been detected during 24-hour observation period.

The state volcanologists reported that the volcano had a moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes aside from the volcanic quakes. The agency also advised the residents to take precautionary measures for any irregularities.

The seismology agency said that the volcano would continue to show irregularities as it remains at an abnormal conditions under alert level 1. The public is still prohibited to enter the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone.

The volcano is expected to generate rockfalls, landslides, avalanches, sudden ash puffs and steam-driven or phreatic eruptions under alert level 1. Lahar is also expected during heavy rainfall.

“Active stream/river channels and those identified as perennially lahar-prone areas on all sectors of the volcano should also be avoided especially during extreme weather conditions when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall,” Phivolcs said.
