Meaning of “Boga” That Is Involved in Police Jonel Nuezca-Gregorios Incident in Tarlac
BOGA – Police Corporal Jonel Nuezca reportedly went to Sonya and Frank Gregorio to investigate about “boga”.
A recent incident that transpired in Tarlac yesterday, December 20, took the social media by storm. It was between a cop, police corporal Jonel Nuezca, and a civilian mother and son, Sonya and Frank Gregorio.
Netizens are crying for justice for the Gregorios who lost two of their family members to the incident. Based on a report on Rappler, Paniqui Police confirmed what really happened as some of the video circulating online do not contain the whole scenario.
According to the Tarlac Provincial Police Office Director Colonel Renante Cabico, Nuezca went to the Gregorios to investigate who was using “boga”.
What is “boga”? It is an improvised canon that is used to make a noise during the celebration of the New Year. It is often made of bamboo but may also be done out of tin cans.
According to the report, when Nuezca tried to arrest the 25-year-old Frank Gregorio who appeared to be drunk, his mother, Sonya, get into the scenario until it led to the death of the mother and son as the police shot them both. The daughter of the cop was also present during the incident and she even went viral as she told the woman that her father is a policeman.

Cabico stressed that Nuezca is off duty during that time. His usual assignment was at the Paranaque City Police Crime Laboratory and he has just come back to Tarlac. Reportedly, there is a long dispute between the people involved over the right of way. Nuezca has already surrendered to the authorities.
