ICC Prosecutor Investigates Duterte, Finds “Reasonable Basis”

Pres. Duterte Probed by ICC Prosecutor Over Drug Campaign

ICC PROSECUTOR – A prosecutor of the International Criminal Court lodged an investigation against Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

One the most well-known campaigns of Pres. Duterte when he ran for the top post in the government is to eradicate the presence of drugs. He has always been vocal about his madness towards it as it destroys the lives of people.

Pres. Duterte vowed to clean the country from drugs in six months. However, the Chief Executive later on admitted that he might have miscalculated its extent. The drug war is still ongoing now.

The campaign of the Philippine President did not only catch the attention of the human rights defenders in the country but as well as the international court.

In February 2018, International Criminal Court Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda lodged an investigation over the drug campaign of Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte. The preliminary investigation of the ICC Prosecutor probed the deaths of people amid the campaign.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the ICC Prosecutor found “reasonable basis” to believe that the human rights are bypassed by the campaign.

“The Office is satisfied that information available provides reasonable basis,” Prosecutor Bensouda said.

The Prosecutor cited the events between July 1, 2016 and March 16, 2019. Based on the report, she also mentioned that most of the victims are on the “watch list” while others were those who surrendered to the authorities.

According to Bensouda, currently, their investigation is limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are hoping that they can continue with the probe in 2021.
