LEO CONSTELLATION – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about the northern constellation Leo, the Lion.
It is of the largest constellation in the northern sky. It represents “the Lion” and is usually associated with the Nemean lion in the Greek mythology.
The Nemean lion is one of the twelve labors who was killed by the Greek hero Heracles.
Meanwhile, it is known as Shir or Ser for the Persians; the great lion or UR.GU.LA for the Babylonians; Aryo for the Syrians; and Artan for the Turks.
It is home to the bright stars Regulus and Denebola, Wolf 359, and galaxies Messier 65, Messier 66, Messier 95, Messier 96, Messier 105, and NGC 3628.
It is the 12th largest constellation in size which occupies an area of 947 square degrees. It can be found in NQ2, the second quadrant in the northern hemisphere.
It belongs to the Zodiac family of constellations along with Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius and Pisces.
The Leonids and January Leonids are two meteor showers that are associated with the constellation.
