Midnight In A Perfect World offers a new flavor in Pinoy horror films
Jasmine Curtis, Glaiza de Castro, Anthony Falcon, and Dino Pastrano starred in the movie Midnight In A Perfect World and directed by Dodo Dayao.
The film is about four friends whose common friend Daena had a “blackout” and had disappeared. “Blackouts” is an extreme punishment against those who violated laws as ordered by the authoritarian government.
Mimi (Jasmine), Jinka (Glaiza), Glenn (Anthony), and Tonichi (Dino) were caught on the street when the curfew hour hit. Pitch darkness enveloped them as loud siren devoured the silence.
They ran frantically to get into a safe house but they later on realized that Tonichi was no longer with them. Based on the movie review that Fred Said published, the acting of the four lead characters is commendable as they were known to be stars of indie films in the past.
However, the review questioned the relevance of the characters of Mimi’s stepfather and a classy woman that the four millennials encountered in a safe house.
The movie review also mentioned that there was an alien creature called “Mimic”. There was also a man in the first scene played by Brian Sy whose connection in the story was also unclear.
On the other hand, the review likened the concept of incorporating dreams in a reality to the one that was tackled in the movie inception. Midnight In A Perfect World also featured an allusion of the current war on drugs and terms like “curfew” and “desaparecidos” (“disappeared people”) that sort of “beta version of Martial Law.”
Based on the review, this horror movie, only the second film of Dayao after his debut movie Violator in 2014, is impressively smooth and it featured a complex sophisticated plot. The cinematography is worth to be mentioned also as it was able to use the pitch darkness excellently.
