DepEd Conducts Probe After Students in Uniforms Reportedly Attend Cebu Tourism Event

The Department of Education (DepEd) is investigating why students in school uniforms are reportedly told to attend Cebu Tourism Event.

DepEd regional director Salustiano Jimenez said that the agency has formed a team to investigate the reports regarding the alleged gathering of the students during the Suroy-Suroy Sugbo on Bantayan Island.

The Suroy-Suroy Sugbo event aims to restore the local economy in the region amid the health crisis. The event earned criticisms online after people reportedly defied the social distancing measures.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque and local officials led by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia have attended the event.

Jimenez said that DepEd would still determine the sanctions and penalties towards the school officials responsible for taking the students to the event amid the coronavirus pandemic. The students have been reportedly spotted last November 27, 2020.

“] DepEd will see what we can do if teachers or principals will be proven to be behind this incident. We shall also determine the gravity of the situation so we can assess what will be the sanctions, if any,” Jimenez said.

The regional director said he did not receive any request to allow students to go out and attend the event.

According to some reports, the students have been told to go out wearing their school uniforms and greet the participants of the three-day event.
