Update on Inmates in Ilocos Norte Jail Amid COVID-19 Cases Surge

INMATES IN ILOCOS NORTE – Eighty-nine (89) new cases of COVID-19 were recently recorded in the provincial jail.

The Philippines is still on a fight against the spread of COVID-19. This disease is a global pandemic that affected over 200 countries and territories across the globe.

In the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) has logged a total of 429,864 cases of coronavirus including 8,373 deaths and 398,624 recoveries. The entire country is still under community quarantine measures.

General Community Quarantine or GCQ will remain in the entire Metro Manila until December. Several other cities and provinces with higher cases of COVID-19 are also under GCQ to contain the spread of the disease.

One of the provinces that recorded cases of COVID-19 is Ilocos Norte. Previously cases of COVID-19 were recorded in their provincial jail. Five (5) employees of the INPJ contracted the disease.

After it, several inmates in the provincial jail tested positive for the disease. They were immediately isolated and put under treatment in the facility.

A targeted testing was done in the jail and the results are now out with 89 inmates in Ilocos Norte Provincial Jail testing positive for COVID-19. According to the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, the province recently had its highest daily record of 92 cases in a day and 89 of it are from the INPJ.

The local government assured that all the new cases including the 89 inmates in Ilocos Norte Provincial Jail were isolated even before their swab samples were collected for testing.

Currently, there are 101 inmates in Ilocos Norte Provincial Jail who are COVID-19 patients. In the entire province, the total cases has reached 357. The province’s capital, Laoag City, is currently under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ).
