Sen. Lacson Speaks on Treatment of Pres. Duterte to Detained Sen. de Lima

LACSON – Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson questioned the treatment of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to Sen. Leila de Lima over the accusations against her.

Pres. Rodrigo Duterte has always been vocal that corrupt officials has no place under his governance. Since he started his presidential term in 2016, a lot of people working in government agencies were either sacked or asked to resign over corruption allegations.

These individuals accused of corruption are currently facing charges. The Chief Executive previously reminded government workers to do well in their positions as many people can replace them.

However, according to Pres. Duterte, with regards to lawmakers, he cannot be the one to investigate them. It is despite corruption allegations.

The Office of the President received a list of congressmen facing corruption of allegations. But, for Pres. Duterte, he cannot probe them and would instead hand it over to the authority for it.

Pres. Duterte stressed the “separation of powers”. He explained that he is in the Executive branch which is co-equal with the Legislative branch where lawmakers are under.

Sen. Ping Lacson reacted to the statement of Pres. Duterte. He questioned the treatment of the President to Sen. Leila de Lima who is currently detained.

Sen. de Lima is facing allegations of drug trade involvement. She is a former secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and allegations are within her term in the post.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Sen. Lacson stressed that the law is fair and it would cut across the different branches of the government. According to him, the task force created by Pres. Duterte must include all investigations even those of accused legislators.

Malacanang spoke on the issue and stressed that the case of Sen. Leila de Lima is different. According to Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, there is a strong evidence against the Senator of her alleged involvement to the drug trade.
