Reason Why Pres. Duterte Can’t Probe Congressmen
DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte explained why he cannot investigate congressmen who are acccused of corruption.
Two of the most staunch campaigns of Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte during the election campaign period in 2016 is the war against drugs and corruption. He has always been vocal of how much he hates these two ill practices.
However, the former Davao City Mayor miscalculated the extent of drugs in the Philippines and was not able to end it in 6 months. Meanwhile, the fight against it continues.
With regards to corruption, several government officials were removed from their posts following accusations of ill practices. Charges have also been filed against these people.
However, with regards to accusations of corruption against congressmen, Pres. Duterte stressed that he cannot investigate them. Meanwhile, he explained why he cannot do so despite his strong stand against corruption.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, in his recent late-night national address, the President explained that the congressmen belong in a different branch, the Legislative, that is co-equal with the Executive Branch.
“I cannot investigate congressmen. It will be an encroachment of the separation of powers. Hindi ako puwede,” the President said.
Based on the report, Pres. Duterte stressed that if the list of the congressmen accused of corruption will be given to him, he will have “no other recourse” but to give it to the Ombudsman.
The explanation of the President came after Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) Commissioner Greco Belgica submitted to his office a list of “corrupt” congressmen.
