What Is Pumice? About The Igneous Rock
PUMICE – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about a volcanic felsic rock which is known as pumice.
It is a light-colored, extremely porous igneous rock which is formed during explosive volcanic eruptions.
Its name is derived from the Latin word pumex, which means “foam” in English. It was formerly called “Spuma Maris” or froth of the sea in Latin
The rock is used as aggregate in lightweight concrete and landscaping aggregate. It has a foamy appearance.
It is also used an abrasive in a variety of industrial and consumer products. According to Geology, they have a high enough porosity, making them float on water until they slowly become waterlogged.
How it is formed are hinted by its pore spaces, known as vesicles. These are actually gas bubbles trapped in the rock during the rapid cooling of a gas-rich frothy magma.
This cools very quickly that atoms in the melt are unable to arrange themselves into a crystalline structure. This also means that the rock is a mineraloid.
It can be found all around the world deriving from continental volcanic occurrence and submarine volcanic occurrence. This can also be distributed by ocean currents.
