Baguio Diocese Doesn’t Want Tourists From Luzon, Says It’s a Bad Idea
BAGUIO DIOCESE ON LUZON TOURISTS – The Catholic diocese of Baguio said opening doors to tourists from Luzon was not a good idea.
Currently, Major areas in Luzon have seen a decrease in the number of coronavirus cases. One of the prime examples of this is Metro Manila, which is currently under a general community quarantine.
However, despite the decrease in the infection rate, Fr. Manuel Flores still believes that “It would be better not yet to open Baguio City for the whole Luzon. Baguio City is ranked 2nd high-risk area given the cases it is encountering daily“. But, Flores did agree to open the economy of the city to Region 1 and Cordillera to assist in reviving the economy.
Recently, OCTA research team did an investigation which revealed that Baguio was among the list of top high-risk areas for coronavirus. This was due to an increased average in new daily COVID-19 cases. Furthermore, occupancy rate in medical facilities have reached 69% and above.
As such, Baguio City Mayor and contact-tracing czar Benjamin Magalong only allowed 300 tourists per day in the city at any given time. Meanwhile, according to an article from GMA, Fr. Flore’s reaction was based on Catholic social teachings. The teaching stated that the church would not stand in the way of any business as long as it does not pose a threat to individuals’ lives and health.
