Chinese Vaccine Company Drops Philippines In Clinical Trials

VACCINE COMPANY DROPS PHILIPPINES – The Chinese pharmaceutical company, Sinopharma, said they would not continue vaccine trials in the Philippines.

Supposedly, Sinopharma was set to conduct Phase 3 of its clinical trials for its coronavirus vaccine candidate. Meanwhile, according to Dr. Jaime Montoya, executive director of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, the firm backed out due to financial reasons.

Montoya said that the firm wanted a co-financing scheme when it comes to the trials. However, the Philippine government said they only committed to support WHO’s Solidarity trials in terms of funding. Along with this, Montoya emphasized that the country had limited funds.

But, the DOST Research chief noted that Sinopharma would still sell its coronavirus vaccine to the Philippines once it’s developed. “I think they are still interested in marketing the vaccine in the Philippines“, Montoya stated.

The Chinese Firm Sinopharma is but one of the six foreign entities that sought to conduct clinical trials in the Philippines. Furthermore, these pharmacies had signed a Confidentiality Data Agreement (CDA) with the PCHRD.

This is required for foreign institutions to before turning over data on Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials needed for the DOST and the Food and Drug Administration to review, prior to undergoing Phase 3 vaccine trials. Still, Montoya highlighted that there were some foreign companies developing vaccines that didn’t require the CDA.

Currently, the Philippines has reported over 362,243 cases of COVID-19. Of that number, more than 311,500 have recovered. Meanwhile, there are 6,747 individuals that have succumbed to the deadly disease.
