Churches Burned Down During Protest As Thousands Gathered In Santiago Square

CHURCHES BURNED DOWN DURING PROTEST – Two churches were razed as thousands of protesters occupied Santiago square in Chile.

The demonstration marks the anniversary of the protest movement last year demanding better equality in Chile. Furthermore, the demonstration comes days before Chileans vote on whether or not the dictatorship-era continues.

However, the protest, although largely festive in the morning had accounts of violence, looting, and vandalism in the afternoon. Among these acts was a burning of a church close to Plaza Italia. Another place of worship was also burned and looted by protesters.

As the churches burned, hooded protesters began cheering. Meanwhile, firefighters struggled but managed to get the flames under control. Although according to the local press, the small Church of the Assumption was completely destroyed.

But, in the morning after, the atmosphere completely changed with demonstrators wearing masks as a safety measure against the coronavirus held up banners. Along with this, they began singing and dancing. Furthermore, police eventually pulled out from Plaza Italia.

Protesters were calling to approve the vote to end the dictatorship in their country. According to Victor Hugo de la Fuente, protesters were happy due to the chance of progressing and achieving a “fairer, more democratic Chile”.

Meanwhile, Paulina Villarroel, a 29-year-old psychologist said this was an opportunity to express that the people had enough. She added that they were ready to vote to approve the amendments.

Amid the protests, Chile has also struggled with an outbreak of COVID-19. SO far, more than 13,000 Chileans have succumbed to the deadly disease. Meanwhile, over 490,000 have been infected with the new coronavirus.
