Pimentel Says Workers Must Get 13th Month Pay Amid DOLE’s Proposal to Defer It

Senator Pimentel said that the worker must receive their 13th month pay amid DOLE’s proposal to allow companies to defer it.

Earlier this week, the Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III proposed to allow companies and private businesses not to give 13th month pay to workers amid the health crisis.

Bello said that the companies should prove that they are ’distressed’ before DOLE give them the approval or exemption in giving the 13th month pay to their employees. However, the proposal is still subject for review and discussion.

However, the proposal received a massive amount of criticisms from the public and especially from workers who were expecting to receive their 13th month pay.

“Mali na gawing sacrificial lamb ang mga manggagawa lalo pa’t gipit ngayon at marami ang nangangailangan ng pondo,” Kilusang Mayong Uno chairperson Elmer Labog.

Recently, Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said that the employees must receive their 13th month pay. He also described the extra month pay as “salary”, according to the current laws.

‘’It is just called 13th month pay. Hence it must be paid. Employees are ‘more distressed’ compared to their ‘capital providing’ employers,’’ Pimentel said.
