Isko Moreno Insists Crushed Dolomite Poses No Health Risk

MANILA BAY – Mayor Isko Moreno insisted that the dolomite in Manila Bay is not hazardous to health.

The controversial Manila Bay white sand project of the Department of Environment Natural Resources (DENR) opened to the public on Saturday, September 19. The project pushed through despite opposition from several groups, lawmakers, and netizens.

Vice President Leni Robredo said it an ‘insensitive’ move of the government because the Philippines is still battling the pandemic. Meanwhile, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said it will benefit the mental health of the Filipinos.

On Thursday, the water on Manila Bay reportedly turn white the fishes wash up. Photos and videos of the dead fishes floating in the water alarmed lots of people.

Experts also said the crushed dolomite on the shore is hazardous to health. Based on a report from Manila Bulletin, the Department of Health (DOH) said the dolomite used for the beautification project in Manila Bay posed no health risk.

“Dolomite in its bulk state is not a known health hazard and dolomite in dust form, like any other dust particles, can lead to symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and coughing for this is our body’s normal reaction to irritants,” DOH said.

On Saturday, DENR Secretary Roy Cimatu and Manila Mayor Franciso “Isko Moreno” Domagoso led the event to mark the International Coastal Clean-up Day. A large crowd of visitors was seen at the opening of Manila Bay “white sand” beach. The photos of the visitors receive ire from the online community because they are not practicing physical distancing.

Mayor Isko Moreno proudly introduced the “white sand” beach to the public. Based on a report from PEP, he also explained why he supported DENR’s makeover project at Manila Bay. The actor-turned-politician insisted that the dolomite posed no health risk.

“Hindi na kailangang pumunta sa Copacobana beach sa Brazil. There’s Brazil in Manila!”

“May mga iilan nagsasabi na hindi napapanahon. Ang tanong ko sa inyo, kailan ang panahon para pangalagaan ang kapaligiran ng ating bansa?” he asked.
