Funds For Bayanihan 2 Inadequate – VP Leni Robredo

LENI ROBREDO – Vice President Leni Robredo said the funds for the Bayanihan 2 measure inadequate.

Senator Sonny Angara proposed the 2nd emergency law the “Bayanihan to Recover as One” bill or the “Bayanihan 2” after the “Bayanihan to Heal as One” act lapsed on June 25. The Bayanihan 2 aims to cushion the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

It includes the cash-for-work programs, emergency subsidy to workers, support programs for impacted sectors, for agricultural sectors, and prevention and control of the disease. In a previous article, Senator Imee Marcos revealed that some funds under the act were slashed into smaller amounts.

In a video message last night, Vice President Leni Robredo said the funds allocated under Bayanihan 2 are inadequate. She said the government should spend more because the survival of the country’s economic depends on it.

“The provisions indicated and the funds allocated under Bayanihan 2 are not enough. The government must spend more, spend efficiently, and spend quickly, with the utmost sense of urgency, as if our economic survival depends on it – because it does. And yet, here we are, still dependent on a pre-COVID budget,” said Robredo.

Lat Thursday, the Senate has ratified the Bayanihan 2. It only needs President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s signature to become law. In her 20-minute address, VP Leni Robredo made several recommendations to help save the country’s economy.

“Giving P5,000 pesos monthly for four months to the 10 million poorest families sums up to P200 billion — small amount to save our fellow Filipinos from hunger. The national government has already distributed financial assistance twice, but many experts agree that we should allocate more funds to extend such an effort,” she said.
