More Than 270 Aftershocks of Masbate Earthquake Hit Phivolcs’ Record
MASBATE EARTHQUAKE – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded more than 270 aftershocks of the strong quake that hit Masbate.
In the Philippines, the body that records natural occurrences like earthquakes and tsunami is the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or more commonly called as Phivolcs.
Every day, Phivolcs got a long list of quakes that hit the different parts of the country. Some were hardly felt at all while others really caused strong shaking. The country is prone to quake as it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Yesterday, Phivolcs recorded a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Masbate. After a few minutes, it was upgraded to 6.6 magnitude and several aftershocks were recorded by the agency.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, Phivolcs recorded more than 270 aftershocks of the Masbate earthquake. Its chief seismologist, Renato Solidum, said that 108 of the aftershocks recorded as of 4:00 a.m. got magnitudes between 1.6 to 4.4.
Solidum stressed that people living in houses or buildings with damages should evacuate for the meantime. Based on the report, the Chief of Phivolcs stressed that there’s a need for infection if the property can still be used or not anymore.
“Iyong malalakas na aftershocks, puwedeng ituloy ‘yong dagdag na kasiraan ng bahay, gusali at tuluyang bumagsak,” Solidum explained.
According to Masbate Mayor Felipe Cabatana, he thought it was the “end of the world”. He said that 48 people were hurt in the town by the quake. Most of them got hit by furniture inside their houses.
