But, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque believes that the government’s effort was still “effective”. He explained that if not for the these efforts, millions would’ve gotten the disease.

According to an article from Inquirer, Roque stated:

It’s working. Because if we didn’t take steps, then millions would have fallen sick from COVID-19 like what UP (the University of the Philippines) initially predicted. It’s working, because only a small number died from the disease

Furthermore, several hospitals in the country have warned that they have reached maximum capacity for COVID-19 patients. Meanwhile, nurses in Cebu City expressed that they wanted to quit their jobs due to lack of support.

Currently, the government imposed a new initiative to contain the spread of the coronavirus called “Oplan Kalinga” or the “house-to-house” search for infected patients.

Critics argued that the operation would violate human rights and could be used as a form of Tokhang. However, Roque shrugged off the comparison.
