ABS-CBN FRANCHISE HEARING – The House of Representatives will tackle issues regarding 2016 elections versus ABS-CBN on July 6, Monday.
Among the most controversial issues of today in this time of pandemic is the franchise renewal of the biggest media network in the country, the ABS-CBN. They are currently facing a lot of issues following the cease and desist order from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
Now, on Monday, July 6, the house legislative franchises committee is set to hold the 12th hearing of the network about its renewal. Thousands of employees, millions of viewers, the media, and business sectors were left in a state of uncertainty.
The 12th hearing will tackle the network’s coverage of the 2016 elections and all the issues which involved President Rodrigo Duterte and his allies. Labor issues and tax issues of the company are just some of the discussed issues during the previous hearings.
What happened in 2016 elections?
Accordingly, the network has become biased and was taking sides. During the campaign season, the network failed to air political advertisements of Duterte which was paid. And since then, after this happened, the president expressed wrath versus the network and vowed to block their franchise renewal.
A refund happened and the rest of the amount of the paid advertisements went to charity. The network, through CEO and President Carlo Katigbak, apologized to Duterte and the president himself accepted the public apology. But although he accepted it, he gave no assurance regarding their franchise renewal.
