Former Senate Pres. Juan Ponce Enrile Speaks on Issue Over ABS-CBN Ownership

JUAN PONCE ENRILE – The former Senate President spoke on the ownership issue involving the ABS-CBN network.

Currently, the franchise of the ABS-CBN network has yet to be renewed. Its broadcasting operation is now suspended following the release of a Cease and Desist Order against the network.

The said order was issued by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). Immediately, the broadcasting operation went off-air and it took social media by storm.

The people have mixed reactions regarding the matter. Some claim that the move is lawful while others are disappointed as they look after the welfare of the people employed in the network.

Currently, the broadcasting operation of ABS-CBN is still on off-air. The network has previously revealed that it is losing a huge amount of money daily and they might be terminating some of their employees though it is hard for them.

Hearings regarding the franchise of ABS-CBN network are ongoing now. One of the issues is with regards to the ownership of the network. Recently, former Senate Pres. Juan Ponce Enrile, the Defense Minister during the Marcos regime, spoke his side on the issue.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, former Senate Pres. Juan Ponce Enrile claimed that the ownership of the ABS-CBN was maintained under the Lopez family. According to him, it remained under the Lopez’s ownership even after a sequestration order was released in 1972.

“The title of all of these facilities were never transferred to the government, they remained with the owners,” Enrile said according to the report.

Currently, the issues against the Kapamilya network have yet to be resolved. Some of its shows have already returned to airing while others’ airing were cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
