Making a fake Facebook account is accordingly a criminal act.
FAKE FACEBOOK ACCOUNT – Creating and cloning of fake Facebook account of someone is accordingly punishable under Republic Act No. 10175.
Recently igniting a public scare in terms of security online, people demanded maximum protection from Facebook as making of fake Facebook accounts have become rampant. Many netizens discovered they have online doppelgangers and it sparked fear.
Mostly, those accounts which were cloned or duplicated are owned by people who are critical over the present administration. This happened following tight protest in pushing through the Anti-Terror Bill. Moreover, they fear that these fake accounts might put the real yet innocent owners in real trouble once this bill is passed into law.
According to a previous report, there are people who pay others Php 3,000.00 just to make fake accounts of anyone. Some fake accounts are use to spread fake news and has posts being a pro-NPA. And this might be used as an evidence once the particular bill is passed. Lawmakers fear that this could be “online tanim-ebidensya” movement.
Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete, with all of this happening, shared that they have already appealed to Facebook to take down these dummy accounts but also preserve data for future evidence. He added that computer-related identity theft is a crime and one can be punished to be imprisoned for six (6) to 12 years as indicated under Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
Students who got victimized have come from schools like University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, University of San Carlos, and University of San Jose Recoletos as per Inquirer.
