The genus Populus, commonly known as aspen, poplar, and cottonwood, is a genus of 25–30 species of deciduous flowering plants in the family Salicaceae. Populus is the New Latin term for “poplar”.

The species tremuloides is a combination of two Latin words “tremulus” meaning shaking, quaking, quivering, trembling, tremulous, and “-oides”, referring to its trembling behavior.
