DepEd Summer Class 2020 Guidelines Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

DEPED – The Department of Education released the guidelines for the summer class 2020 amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The coronavirus or COVID-19 cases in the Philippines has affected almost everything. Churches closed and masses cannot be held as it draws the crowd, classes in schools were suspended, non-essential businesses temporarily stopped their operation, etc.

Supposedly, a lot of students and those who are taking their masteral and doctorate degrees will be having summer classes. However, the community quarantines have to be implemented to prevent the spread of the disease.

Previously, the entire Luzon and most provinces in Visayas and Mindanao were under an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). It was just beginning May 1 when some areas were downgraded to a General Community Quarantine (GCQ).

Both under the ECQ and GCQ, most students still are not allowed to go out from their households. The measures are set until May 15 and the authorities will be assessing the situation again per areas if it would be lifted, changed, or extended.

With regards to the summer classes in schools under the Department of Education, the Department recently released a notice. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, DepEd released guidelines regarding the summer classes 2020.

The Department is still encouraging schools to implement distance learning. It is a mode of teaching and learning with there is little or no face-to-face interaction at all. Based on the report, it is encouraged until students are once again allowed to leave their houses for school purposes.

The advancement, enrichment, and remedial classes will start on May 11, 2020. According to the Department, Saturday classes can be held until a six-week period.

Based on the report, with regards to remedial classes for Grade 1 students until senior high school, the pupils may instead be asked to attend remedial classes during the next school year.

According to the Department, for schools who are planning to have make-up classes instead of remedial classes, they have to submit an implementation plan. The plan has to be sent to the division superintendent before the start of the school year 2020-2021.
