May 8, Recorded the Highest Heat Index This Year
PAGASA-Mactan weather bureau chief said May 8 has recorded the highest heat index this year, as the heat will reach 42 degrees Celsius this weekend.
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa)-Mactan weather bureau chief Al Quiblat, said the expected temperature this weekend, May 9 and 10, 2020, possibly range from 27 to 34 degrees Celsius with an equivalent heat index of 42 degrees Celsius.
Quiblat said: “They should take cover from time to time and drink a lot of water. Of course, they should also have a wet towel ready. It can help protect oneself from the heat.”
“During their duty hours, they should avoid overeating because if you’re too full, it will add to your body heat,” he added.
The public was also advised to refrain from prolonged sun exposure from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to PAGASA, the heat index is a human discomfort index as the temperature affects the body.
According to Sunstar, A heat index of 32 to 41 degrees Celsius is categorized under Extreme Caution. Its potential side effects include heat cramps and heat exhaustion, also continuous activity under the sun can result in heatstroke.
Quiblat said they measured a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius until 12:45 p.m. of Thursday, May 8, with an equivalent heat index of 43 degrees Celsius. He said, this is the highest temperature ever recorded for this year.
With the heat index expected to reach 42 degrees Celsius this weekend, the public, especially Covid-19 frontliners who are manning checkpoints and patrolling on the streets, are advised to take extra precautions to avoid heat-related accidents and emergencies.
