Lito Atienza Blames Alan Peter Cayetano For ABS-CBN’s Shutdown

ABS-CBN – Former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza blamed Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano for the shutdown of ABS-CBN broadcast and radio operations.

The largest tv network in the Philippines, ABS-CBN, has millions of loyal viewers nationwide. After the media network went off-air on Tuesday evening, a man destroyed his tv and rant about its closure. His video elicited mixed reactions from the online community.

Filipino celebrities Angel Locsin, Coco Martin, Kathryn Bernardo, and Judy Ann Santos expressed their sentiment about the broadcast network’s shutdown last night. They were heartbroken knowing 11,000 workers just lost their jobs amid the coronavirus crisis.

In a previous article, Rep. Jose Salceda said the Kapamilya network’s closure would lead to more COVID-19 infections in the country. The lawmaker said NTC should have planned or reviewed it thoroughly before issuing the cease and desist order amid the quarantine protocols.

He said lots of people will now go outside their homes because their primary source of information and entertainment has shut down. Salceda said, “the NTC behavior essentially is aggravating this threat to our national health.”

Based on a report from GMA News, Buhay party-list Representative Lito Atienza said Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano should be blamed for the media network’s shutdown. He also apologized on behalf of the members of the House of Representatives for not doing their job amid ABS-CBN’s franchise issue.

“Kasalanan namin ito, kasalanan ng Kongreso ito. But more important, I’d like to say squarely, kasalanan ni Speaker Cayetano ito. Pagkukulang niya ito sa bayan…”

“He will have a lot to explain one day. It may not be today, but later on this issue will hound him because he is the one who did not do his job,” he added.

According to the report, Lito Atienza said the NTC was just doing its job. He also said that Malacañang Palace was not behind the company’s closure. He admitted that they have failed their countrymen and they should answer it especially Cayetano.

“Hindi pa huli ang lahat. If every member of Congress now speaks up, Speaker Cayetano will be drowned out in his position…”

“I hope every member of Congress starts talking like this. Hindi yung dadaanin natin sa emotion, dadaanin natin sa magagandang statements pero sa totoo lang we are not doing everything inside Congress to force the leadership to act on the matter,” he added.

In a previous article, the Kapamilya network released a statement on the agency’s cease and desist order.
