Seagulls Resort To Eating Rats And Pigeons Amid Quarantine

SEAGULLS RESORT TO EATING RATS – In just two months into the lockdown in Italy, big seagulls have began to become aggressive killers.

Due to the quarantine, the seagulls have been deprived of food scraps left by restaurants and bars in Rome. Now, these animals turned to eat rats ad pigeons on the streets of Italy’s capital.

In lieu of this, a zoologist from the Rome University Tor Vergata stated that the seagulls have started to go back to being predators.

Previously, Rome’s sharp-beaked seagulls developed a taste for pigeon and rat but they were usually dead, roadkill due to Rome’s traffic. However, the gulls have now switched back from pecking to killing.

According to the Telegraph UK, the type of species is known as the Royal Gull. Meanwhile, in English, it is known as the Yellow-Legged Gull. The species got a notorious reputation for being aggressive.

After pecking their prey to death, the seagulls would often just swallow its prey whole. Furthermore, they have also been seen to fight over prey before.

Due to the sudden shift in the lifestyle of the gulls, they have resorted to being more aggressive than before. Last year, these gulls have even been spotted attacking humans.

However, the attack on humans was attributed to it being breeding season for the birds living close to the beach. Zoologist believe they were just trying to protect their new born.
