VCO to be tested as coronavirus treatment
Coronavirus Treatment – Experts are set to test virgin coconut oil as a treatment for the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Department of Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato de la Peña said that COVID-19 patients are now being selected for the clinical trial of VCO that will be provided by the Philippine Coconut Authority. Previously, a Filipino doctor also shared the game-changer medicines that could help treat the new coronavirus.
Amid the pandemic, experts from around the globe have been studying possibilities when it comes to treating the deadly virus. Just recently, the Science Secretary said that the ethics board already approved the trial.
Following this, the personnel of Santa Rosa Community Hospital trained for this measure while talks regarding the agreement were being conducted between the government of Santa Rosa and other parties involved.
The trial will last 28 days and the enrollment of patients is already underway. 45 patients will be chosen including those who are under suspected cases.
Then, another 45 patients will be chosen but they will not be given virgin coconut oil as part of their treatment. Based on the report from Inquirer, the Food and Nutrition Institute will be the in-charge of patients’ meals.
De la Peña said that the meals will be mixed with three tablespoons of VCO. He is expecting also that the ethics board of the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila will also do the same trials for the UP-Philippine General Hospital.
Based on the report, the DOST sent samples of the derivatives of the coconut oil to laboratories in other countries. “We need to see if, in vitro trials, the materials we sent would have a strong effect and would weaken the [effectiveness] of the virus,” the Science Secretary said.
