Bizarre Teen Rom-Com: Netflix Offers Must-See ‘The Half Of It’

If you want a bizarre teen rom-com, try Netflix’s ‘The Half Of It’

Netflix is offering ‘The Half Of It’ which can be described as a bizarre teen romantic-comedy and would open new perspectives about love.

No one might imagine that someone who always in the background may become the main character of this film. Director Alice Wu aimed this to happen.

“I take a character who in a million years would never think she’d be the main character in a movie…but here I make her front and center. I think that’s her emotional journey, as she goes from being like an afterthought in the school to being the main character — like, really owning it in her life,” she said in a report from CNN.

In the movie, Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis), a shy but with a brilliant mind, is one of those high school students who come and go unnoticed. Her schoolmates would just notice her if they are paying her to write an essay for them or just because they want to make racist comments towards her.

Wu also shared that the movie is based on her experience. “The first time I had my heart broken after coming out as lesbian was not by a girl, but by a guy,” the director said.

Ellie, the main character, has a special feeling for a Latina girl Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire). However, a guy named Paul (Daniel Diemer) approached Ellie to write love letters for the girl he likes, and that’s no other than Alexxis.

This set up between the three characters showcased unlikely connections and broadly presented the vast topic about love and it does not solely talked about romance.

“I think it’s important that these stories get told because they are real. Not everyone is a star quarterback. People are going to school and…experiencing being an outsider.” 23-year-old Leah Lewis said.

Daniel Diemer and Alexxis Lemire both said that they can relate to their characters in the movie. It is not just because they know people who are like their characters but they themselves are also like Paul and Alexxis, based on the article.
