Ohio Prison New Hot Spot For COVID-19, 73% Of Prisoners Test Positive
73% OF PRISONERS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 – Some experts believed that prison systems would be a ticking time-bomb for the coronavirus.
Unfortunately, this was the case for a state prison in Ohio. According to reports from NPR, the prison confirmed at least 1,828 cases of COVID-19 among prisoners. Moreover, this accounts for the majority of cases in Marion County.
Additionally, 109 staff members of the prison also tested positive for the virus. As such, the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction attributed the rise in cases to their mass testings.
They said that they tested everyone, including those asymptomatic to the disease. Previously, it was known that the coronavirus lie dormant inside the body for at least 14 days.
As per the report, there are currently 2,400 COVID-19 cases among inmates in Ohio’s state prisons. Along with this, around 244 staff members were also infected with the virus.
They are pulling off mass testing of their entire population inclusive of staff which is something that no other state is doing
The prison systems are called ticking time-bombs for coronavirus due to its packed nature. Inmates are usually packed together in cells and confined spaces. As such, the virus could easily infect hundreds within a short period of time.
Currently, the number of reported cases of COVID-19 had reached over 2,483,000. Additionally, the number of fatalities caused by the virus had surpassed 170,498. Meanwhile, the number of recovered had increased to over 652,552.
