Baguio City Recognized as ‘Model City’ in the Fight Against COVID-19
Baguio City is now recognized as a model for the local government in combating the deadly virus since there are no new confirmed cases for over a week.
On Wednesday, retired General Restituto Padilla, spokesman for the National Task Force COVID-19, praised Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, as no new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the city in the last 10 days.
“Tatlo po ang direksyon ang kaniyang tinatahak…Una, transparency and communication. Pangalawa, mass testing. At ang pangatlo, effective contact tracing,” Padilla said in a press briefing.
Earlier, Magalong said they had retained their COVID-19 case because of their readiness. Among the city’s measures to prevent the spread of the virus are the suspension of the annual Panagbenga Festival and other large gatherings often attended by tourists.
According to ABS-CBN News, it was March 29 since last number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the city increased. The City Health Office has previously said that Enhanced Community Quarantine has been effective in implementing it.
“Seemingly our ECQ is effective in Baguio City. Our contact tracing has improved and it’s efficient. So ibig sabihin nata-track lahat ng contacts ng mga positive na ito. So hindi tayo nagkakaroon ng transmission…Napakaganda diba because we were able to contain it within Baguio City,” explained Dr. Rowena Galpo, City Health Officer of Baguio City.
The city also plans to reopen the closed hospital for COVID-19 patients. Health officials, however, warned against being complacent since it’s too early to say the city has successfully flattened the curve.
