The Philippines receives rice donations

The Philippines receives rice donations from South Korea for the families who were affected by natural calamities last year.

This is part of the emergency food assistance of South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA). The government of South Korea donated 950 metric tons (MT) of rice for thousands of Filipino families who were affected by the earthquake in Mindanao in 2019 particularly in North Cotabato and Davao del Sur, and other areas in regions 11 and 12.

Flood victims in Cagayan Valley last year will also receive rice donations. Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary William Dar expressed gratitude to the Sout Korean government because of this.

“On behalf of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, we would like to thank President Moon Jae-in and the people of the Republic of Korea for their generosity in helping our countrymen who suffered and survived a series of earthquake in Mindanao and flooding in Cagayan Valley,” Dar said.

The Agriculture secretary also stated this in his letter to  to MAFRA Minister Kim Hyeon-Soo, “South Korea’s donation is a manifestation of your country’s dependable support and concern to the Filipino people, and rest assured the rice will go beyond its initial intended purpose.”

National Food Authority (NFA) administrator Judy Carol Dansal said that Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation shipped non-glutinous rice as part of the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve Tier 3 (APTERR Tier 3) Program.

The said shipment arrived in the Philippines last March at the ports of General Santos City (600 MT) and Manila (350 MT) and temporarily kept at NFA warehouses, based on the official statement of DA.

Following this, NFA will turn over the rice donations to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) that will distribute to the affected families.
