Lawmaker Warns COVID-19 Lockdown Could Lead To Baby Boom
COVID-19 LOCKDOWN – A reproductive health (RH) advocate said the 2019 novel coronavirus lockdown could lead to a baby boom.
The 2019 novel coronavirus has changed how we work. Most of the people are asked to work in their homes. The workers exempted from this arrangement are the frontliners.
Staying at home will help stem the spread of COVID-19. Health officials advised the public to practice social distancing and avoid visiting hospitals.
Couples all over the world now have a lot of time to snuggle due to the new routine. They now have more time on their hands to bond and make love.
Netizens are joking about the new generation of “baby zoomers” being pregnant during the COVID-19-triggered lockdown. Based on a report from Inquirer, reproductive health (RH) advocate Albay Representative Edcel Lagman is concerned about the coronavirus baby boom 9 months from now.
According to the report, Lagman said the Philippine government should start giving out condoms or other contraceptives. He believed that it might help the moms who don’t want to become pregnant during the lockdown.
“In the midst of lockdowns to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, spouses and partners need to avail themselves of contraceptives and other effective methods of family planning to prevent unplanned, unwanted and high-risk pregnancies,” he said.
The lawmaker who authored the Reproductive Health Law of 2012, said his law is very relevant during the coronavirus crisis “as intimacies between couples who are locked down together break the barriers of social distancing.”
Based on the report, Lagman urged the government to “continue discharging its mandate of extending free reproductive health supplies and services to acceptors from the marginalized sectors.”
“Drugstores and pharmacies must have adequate stocks of contraceptives and other RH supplies for those who could afford to buy reproductive health products,” he added.
