Today, we are going to talk about a fish called “La-Ba-Hi-Ta” whose scientific name is the Acanthurus olivaceus“. In English, they are also called “Surgeonfish”.

This fish is used in popular Filipino stews such as Kaldereta, Menudo, and Ginataan. The ocean is filled with fish species of vibrant colors, however, this particular fish isn’t one of them.

They have dull grayish colors and usually feast on algae with their small mouths. Meanwhile, there are other surgeonfish species as well.

One of these is the black surgeonfish. Despite being popular, this fish is quite difficult to catch.

Additionally, the fish species got its name from the sharp, scalpel-like spikes on their tail, this the name “Surgeonfish”.

The labahita also has a distinct feature that you could spot on its tail fins. At the ends of their tails, you could see a stripe of white. However, no matter the feature, this fish is still a delicacy to many Filipinos.
